What is a Virtual Account Number (VAN)?

When you connect to your bank through Plaid or use digital wallets (like Apple Pay or Google Pay), you might notice a card or account number that seems unusual or does not match your records. Don’t worry, this is part of keeping your information secure!

🔒 Secure Connection

  1. Most financial institutions connect to Plaid using a secure API, which may provide a Virtual Account Number (VAN) or a Tokenized Account Number (TAN).
    • For example: JPMorgan Chase Bank
  2. Apple Pay and Google Pay also use VANs to protect your bank account information during digital wallet transactions.
  3. Data Encryption: The secure API ensures that your banking information is encrypted during transmission, adding an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access.
    • 🧾 For ACH or digital wallet transactions, your confirmation receipt may display the last 4 digits of a VAN, instead of the last 4 digits of your actual card or account number.
    • 🗂️ This may also apply to any bank account numbers saved to your Donor Profile.

🏦 Account Protection

  • VANs and TANs ensure your actual card or bank account number is not shared with apps or services.
  • 🕵🏽‍♀️ Enhanced Security: By using virtual numbers, your financial information remains confidential, reducing the risk of fraud.

✅ No Impact on Transactions

  • Using a VAN or TAN will not affect your ability to make donations, receive refunds, or the status of your ACH or digital wallet transactions.

  • 🌟 Consistent Functionality: Your giving experience remains seamless, ensuring that all transfers and payments proceed as expected.
